India's healthcare system, despite being vast and diverse, has long suffered from a lack of centralized, accessible, and portable medical records. Patients often have to carry physical files, repeat diagnostic tests, and re-register at every hospital they visit. In a country of over 1.4 billion people, this was both inefficient and expensive.
To solve this, the Government of India introduced the Unique Health ID (UHID)—now known as ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account)—a revolutionary step toward digitizing the health ecosystem.
The UHID or ABHA ID is a 14-digit unique health identification number provided to every Indian citizen under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). It acts as a digital health identity for individuals and links to their health records across hospitals, clinics, labs, and pharmacies.
14-digit ID unique to every citizen
Secure and voluntary
Linked to your mobile or Aadhaar (optional)
Can be used across public and private health facilities
Stores your health history in a digital format
The UHID, now officially known as ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account), was conceptualized and launched by:
The UHID initiative is part of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15, 2020.
The ABHA system doesn’t store your data in one central place. Instead, it links to health records stored at various health facilities. Here’s what it can access and store with your consent:
Full Name
Gender
Date of Birth
Contact Information
ABHA Address (like email ID for health)
Outpatient (OPD) visit summaries
Inpatient (IPD) admission records
Prescriptions
Lab reports
Radiology images (X-ray, MRI, CT - DICOM files)
Discharge summaries
Vaccination records
Insurance claims linked with Ayushman Bharat
Billing details from hospitals
Linked ABHA address
Consent logs for data sharing
Health locker provider metadata
One unique health ID for every citizen
Access to digital health records from anywhere
Unified prescription/lab report sharing
Health locker for patients
Integration with insurance (Ayushman Bharat, private)
As of March 2025, over 76 crore ABHA IDs have been created across India, covering nearly 50% of the population.
Uttar Pradesh
Rajasthan
Maharashtra
Madhya Pradesh
The Government has responded with a Consent Management Framework and Health Data Management Policy to ensure individual privacy and accountability.
Unified Health Interface (UHI) in progress (like UPI for health)
Teleconsultation, e-pharmacy, wearable integration coming soon
ABHA to be integrated into insurance claims, referrals, and preventive care analytics
The UHID/ABHA ID is one of the most transformational digital initiatives India has launched in recent times. It empowers individuals, improves healthcare quality, and reduces system inefficiencies.
